Common Forklift Accidents and How to Avoid Them

Introduction: Forklift accidents can result in serious injuries and costly damages. Understanding common forklift accidents and how to avoid them is crucial for maintaining a safe workplace.

  1. Tip-Overs:
  • Cause: Overloading, uneven surfaces, or turning too fast.
  • Prevention: Always adhere to the forklift’s load capacity, drive slowly on uneven surfaces, and take turns carefully.
  1. Falls from the Forklift:
  • Cause: Lifting people up on a pallet or the bare fork arms.
  • Prevention: Never use a forklift to lift people unless it is inside a compatible safety cage, that is securely attached to the forklift.
  1. Collisions:
  • Cause: Poor visibility, high speeds, or lack of awareness.
  • Prevention: Ensure clear visibility, operate at safe speeds, and look over both shoulders before reversing.
  1. Pedestrian Accidents:
  • Cause: Lack of communication and awareness between operators and pedestrians.
  • Prevention: Establish clear communication protocols, use warning signals, and create designated pedestrian walkways.
  1. Load Dropping:
  • Cause: Improper loading techniques or faulty equipment.
  • Prevention: Ensure loads are balanced and secure, regularly inspect equipment, and use proper loading techniques. Make sure all pedestrians are at least 3 metres away from the forklift at all times. Never lift a load near or over people.

Conclusion: By understanding and addressing common causes of forklift accidents, you can significantly reduce the risk of injuries and damages. Prioritise safety and proper training to create a safer workplace environment.
